About This Package
The Classic Japan Extended tour builds on our popular 15-day itinerary with additional days to explore destinations that most visitors miss. You will have time to wander the bamboo groves of Arashiyama, feed the friendly deer in Nara, ride the scenic Romance Car to Hakone, explore the samurai history of Kamakura, and experience the electric street food culture of Osaka.

Arrival in Tokyo
TokyoArrive at Narita or Haneda Airport where you will be met by an airport guide who will help you get your Suica cards, pick up your wifi, and navigate the airport seamlessly. Transfer to your hotel in the Shinjuku area. Spend the evening exploring the dazzling lights of Kabukicho, the intimate bars of Golden Gai, or the towering department stores of the world's busiest railway station.
Meiji Shrine, Harajuku & Shibuya
TokyoBegin at the serene Meiji Shrine set within a vast forested park in the heart of the city. Walk through Harajuku's Takeshita Street to experience Japan's wild youth fashion culture. Explore the trendy shops and cafes of Omotesando and Cat Street. End the day in Shibuya, crossing the world-famous Shibuya Scramble and taking in the views from the Shibuya Sky observation deck.
Shinjuku to Hakone & Ryokan Experience
HakoneDepart Shinjuku by RomanceCar express train to Hakone using your Hakone Free Pass. Enjoy the quaint Hakone-Yumoto town and discover a delicious lunch waiting for you in one of the many shops. Check into your traditional ryokan, soak in the onsen hot springs, and enjoy a multi-course kaiseki dinner in your room.
Hakone, Mount Fuji & Bullet Train to Kyoto
HakoneEnjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast at the ryokan. Begin the famous Hakone loop: ride the switchback railway, take the ropeway over volcanic Owakudani valley, cruise Lake Ashi on the iconic pirate ship with views of Mount Fuji, and walk along the 300 year old Tokaido road. Then back to Odawara station, board the Shinkansen bullet train for a peaceful ride to Kyoto in the evening
Kyoto Temples & Geisha District
KyotoVisit the the iconic Kiyomizu-dera temple with its wooden stage overlooking the city, and browse the traditional shops along Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka slopes. In the evening, stroll through the atmospheric Gion geisha district and Pontocho alley.
Kyoto's Golden Temple & Historic Treasures
KyotoDiscover the beauty and history of Kyoto as you visit the iconic Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), the tranquil Zen rock garden at Ryoan-ji, the peaceful Kyoto National Garden, and the magnificent Nijo Castle, once home to Japan's shoguns.
Nara: Deer, Temples, History
NaraDay trip to Nara, Japan's first permanent capital. Visit the enormous Todai-ji temple housing the Great Buddha, feed the hundreds of friendly deer roaming Nara Park, and explore the beautiful Kasuga Taisha shrine with its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns.
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
KyotoEnjoy the day at Arashiyama Bamboo forest, but this place has so much more than just bamboo! Walk along the park with it's great vistas for the gorge below, stroll along the river eating ice cream, and discover all the hidden shops and alleyways in the Arashiyama town. It feels like every day is a festival there! Optional: Take the scenic train to Kameoka an sail down the river back to Arashiyama! (Extra cost per person)
Hiroshima & Miyajima Island
Hiroshima / MiyajimaTake the bullet train to Hiroshima for a profoundly moving visit to the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. After paying your respects, take the JR ferry to Miyajima Island to see the famous floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan's most iconic sights. Enjoy fresh oysters and momiji manju on the island before returning to Kyoto.
Osaka Castle & Dotonbori
OsakaFull day exploring Osaka. Visit the impressive Osaka Castle and its surrounding park, browse the trendy shops of Amerikamura, then dive into the legendary Dotonbori area for the ultimate street food crawl: takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and more. Explore the retro Shinsekai district.
Return to Tokyo
TokyoStart early at Fushimi Inari Taisha to walk through thousands of vermillion torii gates winding up the mountainside, ideally before the crowds arrive. Board the Shinkansen bullet train for the return journey to Tokyo. Check into your Tokyo hotel and spend the late afternoon exploring the nearby neighborhood. Depending on your interests, visit the Akihabara electronics district, browse the shops of Ginza, or wander through the peaceful Imperial Palace East Gardens.
Asakusa & Tokyo SkyTree
TokyoExplore the historic Asakusa district, visiting the magnificent Senso-ji temple, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple, and browsing Nakamise shopping street for traditional souvenirs. Cross the Sumida River to the towering Tokyo SkyTree for panoramic views of the entire city. End your evening in Ginza, Akihbara, or explore izakaya culture on Hoppy Street back in Asakusa.
Ueno & Yanaka
TokyoSpend the morning in Ueno Park, home to several excellent museums including the Tokyo National Museum and the charming Ueno Zoo. Walk through the old-town atmosphere of Yanaka, one of Tokyo's best-preserved traditional neighborhoods, with its winding lanes, independent shops, and the atmospheric Yanaka Cemetery.
Kamakura & Enoshima
KamakuraDay trip to the coastal town of Kamakura the seat of Japan's first military government. See the towering Great Buddha (Kotoku-in), explore Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine, and walk Komachi-dori shopping street. Then head to Enoshima Island and head to the top of the lighthouse or discover the Buddhist Caves
Departure
TokyoDepending on your flight time, enjoy a final morning in Tokyo for last-minute shopping or sightseeing. Transfer to Narita or Haneda Airport for your departure flight. Sayonara, Japan!
